helped increase the number of women in the nursing reserves & after 1912 traveled to recruit women to train as nurses & volunteer in the Armed Services during times of war; thanks to her by 1917 there were 8,000 nurses ready to serve immediately in WWI & by 1918 at least 18,732 nurses had volunteered to serve in the war; spearheaded efforts to organize emergency response teams for disaster relief; was an advocate for providing health education & social services to rural communities & founded Red Cross Town & Country Nursing Services in 1912 to bring health care to rural areas (now known as American National red Cross Public Health Nursing Service); worked to get nurses recognition as full members of the medical profession; established courses for the training of nurses' aides; 1909 founded Red Cross Nursing Services
