About This Innovation
* While at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., King worked on measuring the accurate heats of formation of gaseous fluorine compounds; she received a Meritorious Publication Award for her paper on fluoride flame calorimetry. * This led her to invent special equipment to study very reactive materials for rocket fuels while avoiding explosions. * One of these was a coiled tube that allowed fuel to cool rather than explode. Her equipment and techniques enabled King to study oxygen difluoride, a very toxic & explosive fuel that was subsequently used by NASA as a rocket fuel for Apollo 11. * This research was important to the NASA space program; the techniques & methods she developed are still used today.
