About This Innovation
In 1825 Lukens took over the Brandywine Iron Works & Nail Factory after the death of her husband. At that time, the company was near bankruptcy after he had purchased the equipment to make boiler-plate for ships. Lukens turned the company around, paid off all debt & made it profitable. Lukens was the first industrial employer to build housing for her employees. During the Panic of 1837, instead of laying off her employees they continued to work, fixing & maintaining the factory. She has been called the country's first woman industrialist.
