1908 - Co-founder of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN)

* Mahoney was born in 1845 and knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse, possibly due to seeing immediate emergence of nurses during the American Civil War. * As an adult she was admitted into a sixteen-month program at the New England Hospital for Women and Children and in 1879 she became the first African-American to graduate from an American school of nursing. * In her professional life, Mahoney became acutely aware of discrimination in the nursing field. To address this, Mahoney met in 1908 with two nursing colleagues to found the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN). * This organization worked to improve access to educational and nursing practices and to raise standards of living for African-American registered nurses. * The NACGN continued to play a foundational role in eliminating racial discrimination in the registered nursing profession until it was integrated into the American Nurses Association in 1951.
