* Perl, a Hungarian practicing gynecologist, was deported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp with her family. * She was told by Dr. Mengele to point out all the pregnant women; in order to save pregnant women in the camp from experimentation & death, she performed 100s of abortions. * Granted US citizenship in 1951 & worked at Mt. Sinai Hospital as the only female gynecologist on staff, specializing in infertility & diseases associated with pregnancy. * The 2003 movie ‘Out of the Ashes’ based on her life.
