* First Indigenous woman to become a physician in the United States, Picotte founded the 1st independently funded hospital on a reservation in Walthill Nebraska. * The hospital was closed in 1940, and it became a community center & museum dedicated to her work & the history of the Omaha & Winnebago Tribes. * Picotte further campaigned for public health & the formal legal allotment of land to members of the Omaha Tribe. * She worked to increase sanitary conditions & prevent & treat tuberculosis on the reservation.
