About This Innovation
* Brown was the first female surgeon of African American ancestry who practiced in Nashville, Tennessee. * As an elected member of the Tennessee General Assembly, she unsuccessfully championed the expansion of abortion rights to include cases of rape or incest. * Brown also worked to expand the already existing legally permitted abortions in cases when the "mother's life was in danger".
