* Yates was a correspondent for the Woman's Era (the first monthly magazine published by black women in the United States) * Also wrote for the Omaha Nebraskas Enterprise, Southern Workman, The Voice of the Negro, the Indianapolis Freeman * Co-founder of Kansas City colored Women's League and the 1st Black YWCA in Kansas City * 2nd President of the National Association of Colored Women * Graduated with degree in chemistry * 1st Black woman to head a college science dept at Lincoln Institute 1886.
