1948 - Production of dextran as plasma substitute used by medical personal in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Hematology
About This Innovation
* Jeanes’ research led to the isolation of dextran-producing bacteria, providing for development of a mass production process * Dextran used in a dextran-based blood plasma extender, keeping someone who had lost a great deal of blood alive longer. * Used by medical personal in the Korean and Vietnam wars to treat injured soldiers. * Jeanes was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Service Award given by the Department of Agriculture in 1953.
The Invention
Acylation of Dextran in formamide; Methode of producing an atypically salt-responsive alkali-deacetylated polysaccaride; Method of increasing the viscosity of an aqueous solution of a deacetylated polysaccaride; Atypically salt-responsive alkali-deacetylated polysaccardie produced by xanthomonas campestris; Phosphomannan NRRL Y-2448; Method of producing phosphomannan by saccaride fermentation; Production of Dextranase; Preparation & use of polysaccaride producing enzyme; Phenanthrene dicarboxylic acid; 9-aroyl-10-phenanthroic acid
