Achievements: 1st African-American female licensed to practice medicine in S. C. 1897; 1930, founded the Columbia Clinic Association; 1916, co-founded the Negro Health Association of S. C.; 1901, founded the Taylor Lane Hospital, the 1st black Hospital in Columbia, S.C.; ran 2 farms to feed & support her patients; founded a weekly newspaper, The Negro Health Journal of S.C.; treated both white & Black patients, charging her white patients enabling her to treat indigent black patients; 1914, opened St. Luke s Hospital & Evans Nursing Training; 1922, 1st woman president of the Palmetto State Medical Society; 1926, established Lindenwood Park, Columbia s only recreational facility for African-American children; responsible for implementing routine health examinations in Columbia schools; advocated for public health services; founded the Good Health Association of S.C.
