Achievements: Known for her work on synthesis of emeralds used in Masers & jewelry & zeolites for molecular sieves at Union Carbide; 1973, 1st woman at Union Carbide to be named corporate research fellow & Senior corporate research fellow in 1982;while at Union Carbide & UOP invented over 200 different synthetic substances, authored or co-authored over 36 publications & was awarded over 109 patents; 1st female recipient of Perkin Award (1992); 2014, Edith Flanigen Award created by the Collaborative Research Center at Humboldt University of Berlin; her work with zeolite Y made oil refining more efficient, cleaner & safer; her work with molecular sieves led to innovative applications in water purification & environmental cleanup including decontaminating water at Japan s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant; developed a hydrothermal emeral synthesis process & pioneered the use of mid-infrared spectroscopy for analyzing zeolite structures
