German developmental biologist; 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; with Eric Wieschaus studied the development of fruit flies & approximately 1980 succeeded in identifying & classifying the 15 genes that direct the cells to form a new fly; contributed to the understanding of evolution & how human fetuses develop
