Awards: 1937 Francis P. Garvan Medal (now Garvan-Olin Medal), American Chemical Society; 1957 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry of the Northeastern Section of the ACS (with Mary Lura Sherrill)
Achievements: leader in the ultraviolet spectra of organic molecules as a means of investigating their electronic structure; worked on unsaturated hydrocarbons & absorption spectra; led 1 of the earliest collaborative research groups involving faculty, graduate & undergraduate students
Father & Grandfather were country doctors who were advocates of education for all
taught & did her research at Mount Holyoke College from 1910 to 1946, was chairman of the chemistry Dept from 1913 until her retiring & made it possibly the best research lab facility in the nation
